This service will be available starting early 2018. It’s still being developed, but it’s near completion. This page is always being updated with new developments, so be sure to follow this website to keep track of everything that’s going on with this service.
I’m going to be completely honest with you; I didn’t want to provide self-publishing services at first. That’s the straight honest truth. After all, what could I provide? Even when I thought about providing self-publishing services, I didn’t want it to be confused with providing publishing services. I tried providing those services years ago and failed horribly. It scarred me for life. To this day, it still haunts me. I’m not joking around.
I’m not a millionaire guru who made bank by moving tons of books (like some of these so-called bestsellers claim…). I’m just an ordinary guy living somewhere in Metro Atlanta, who just happens to love to write.
However, I’ve had several people come to me over the last few years, asking me questions like “How do I start writing a book?”, or “Can you help me write my book?”, and even if I think self-publishing is better than publishing (which I always tell people it’s up to their own individual goals, even though I have a preference of self-publishing) and how do they get started. When I started getting more of these questions and requests for help, I had an epiphany: Why not just create a service where I can offer all of my knowledge to people who are interested in getting into self-publishing but don’t know where or how to start? So I’m presenting to you what I call JB Burrage’s Self-Publishing 101.
I’m not going to blow smoke up your behind and tell you that I have the secret to creating a bestseller and making a lot of money by self-publishing, or through any kind of publishing. I don’t have that magic formula. If anybody tells you that they do are probably lying. In fact, in my opinion, if you get into because you think you can be an instant millionaire off of one book, you’re in the wrong business. The publishing business is just that–a business–and a tricky and very competitive business at that. Your book is just one of over a million books published every year, so you do the math.
I’m not saying that to kill your dreams, because it’s a harsh reality I have to remind myself, too. Instead, that should encourage you. While there are plenty of tips out there that can help you make enough money from publishing to quit your day job, making your book into a money-making bestseller is all about you, your ambition and how hard you’re willing to work and commit, how you incorporate all of the tools that you learn from various sources, and a good business/marketing plan.
I know you’re asking these questions: Why should I listen to you? You said it yourself that you’re not a millionaire from self-publishing, so what can you do for me that other more successful self-publishers can’t? I understand why you would have those concerns. I would, too. But I have one simple answer to all of your questions. Here it is (like most things on this site, I put certain things in bold italics to drive home a point):
Most so-called self-publishing “experts” will attempt to sell you on how to make money and get rich by self-publishing. They will post pretty little charts and presentations to brag about their numbers. They will tell you how they made six-figures per book. I’m not denying that the success happened for them. In fact, I would love some of that knowledge, myself. However, with my program, I’m going to the basics and I’m going to talk to you about how to start up a brand new business. Most people get excited about the idea of publishing a book all by themselves and the potential numbers without realizing that self-publishing is actually a serious business venture. No matter the reason for doing it, it’s a business venture that must be treated very seriously. A lot of people will jump head-first into the water, not realizing what they have gotten themselves into until they’re in the middle of the deepest part, struggling to stay above the surface. I’m here to help prevent that.
Some of these self-publishing “experts” have great tools to offer. However, there are some that don’t care if you succeed or not, as long as they get your money, they are fine. In addition to that, there are “publishers” that are like sharks, trying to convince you of why you should go with them instead of publishing yourself, take complete control of your story you worked hard on, and after you realized that you’ve been robbed, you realize that you were better off just doing it yourself. But with the tools I’m offering in my service, you can take them and combine them with the tools you can gain from other experts and self-publishing gurus, who are making huge sales and laughing all the way to the bank. After all, the moment you decide to self-publish, you become an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs study business and the trends all of the time to stay ahead of the game.
I have years of experience in the self-publishing world. I have coached people on the side without credit for a long time. The self-publishing world is changing, but even with the changes, I know what I’m talking about. For my business management degree, I was educated by some of the best and most qualified management experts, marketing strategists, and entrepreneurs in the field, from a reputable college. Combined with that and my love for writing, I’m providing a great service and opportunity that’s worth taking an advantage of. Therefore, I here I am, offering you a chance to tap into the mind of one of the most ambitious writers in the market (at least I think so).
Let me reiterate: this is not a session to teach you how to make a ton of money from publishing books. This is a course that will provide useful information on how to set up a business. Look at JB Burrage’s Self-Publishing 101 as an entry-level, but a top-notched business class that you will get from your favorite university. The only difference is that you can’t take this to get college credit. But you will gain a wealth of information that will help you start and manage a self-publishing business so you can start making money.
The JB Burrage’s Self-Publishing 101 will consist of two phases, a conference and a self-publishing development plan.
Phase One: The Conference
Phase One is a conference, where I will talk about:
- The reasons you want to write this book,
- The pros and cons of traditional publishing and self-publishing,
- Why you should avoid “self-publishing” companies, such as iUniverse or AuthorHouse,
- The various business entities to choose from for the purpose of setting up your self-publishing business (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or limited liability company),
- Managing your self-publishing company,
- The many tools that are available to you as a self-publisher, such distribution methods,
- And more.
I do have to give you my disclaimers, which I will also give to you at the beginning of the session:
- I am not a lawyer or any other legal expert or employee. I have never been trained in the field of law.
- I am not a tax expert. I have never been certified or trained in the field of taxes.
- I’m not a CPA. I had to take accounting classes as part of my business management degree, and I hated it. Needless to say, I’m not going to give you expert accounting advice.
- While I am giving you information based on my own experiences and research, I STRONGLY recommend that you contact a lawyer, CPA, or tax expert before you move forward. Since self-publishing is a business; even if you publish only one book; you’re at risk of litigation and other business-related issues. The only difference is that you’re working for yourself. The information that I provide is not to be used as a substitution for professional legal, CPA, or tax advice.
The conference can be done online or on-site. I can book individual sessions or group sessions.
Phase Two: My Self-Publishing Plan
I am so confident in my background in putting together a team to help you self-publish your book because of my Army experience and business management degree that after the conference, I will put together a self-publishing plan that will be available to you if you choose to take advantage of it. That is Phase Two of the program. This will be perfect for you’re serious about self-publishing, but don’t have the time to do so. I will assemble a great team of editors, graphics, and interior designers, as well as organize other required services that you won’t have to deal with. All you have to do is sit back and relax. I’ll do the work for you. Look at yourself as the CEO of your self-publishing business, and I am the Chief Operating Officer. Once the product is finished, it’s yours to choose whatever self-publishing model you choose, such as Smashwords, Lightning Source, Createspace, or even a printing shop.
All you need to do is send me your completed manuscript and I will send you a polished book that you can promote and sell. My only requirement is that your story has not been plagiarized, and at least been proofread, such as making sure you have little to no run-on sentences and correct spelling. I don’t expect your manuscript to be in perfect English, I don’t even speak or write in the best English, but the editors I subcontract are really good at what they do. They will catch errors, which is expected; however, because my plan will be tailored to a certain price; the more issues they found beyond normal, the more outside of that budget it will cost and will be included in the final invoice.
To be clear, I will not be your publisher. I’m just providing a self-publishing plan and service that’s the best you’re going to find anywhere around. You will always be your own publisher.
This service will only be offered to those who take Phase One of the JB Burrage’s Self-Publishing 101 program. You take Phase One without taking Phase Two, however.
What If You Just Want to On Your Own?
After you take Phase Two of the program, you might realize that you can put it all together yourself, based on the information I provided; therefore, you don’t need Phase Two. I completely understand that. If you don’t want to take advantage of it, I will not abandon you and leave you stranded. There is an alternative, in which I will offer you a month of side-by-side assistance services to help you move along your self-publishing journey. Additional months will be additional fees. The difference with this service is I will not have a hands-on approach to the development of your project.
Like most of my services that I offer, this is a first come, first serve service, with a limited number of spots available. So if you’re serious about this, contact me today by filling out my form on the Booking page.
